Significance
Importance To Berry Global and our Stakeholders
Per the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, “biodiversity is fundamental to human well-being, a healthy planet, and economic prosperity”. It is therefore important that we understand, manage, and mitigate the impact of our operations and supply chain on biodiversity. The importance will only increase as global populations increase, further straining natural resources.
Our Customers: The global economy is dependent upon natural resources. This is especially true for our many customers producing food. It is important for our mutual, long-term viability that we protect biodiversity and support resilient supply chains.
Our Investors: According to the World Economic Forum¹, over half of global gross domestic product (US$44 trillion) is moderately or highly dependent on nature and its services. There is increased awareness of the potential for biodiversity loss to put these economic contributions at risk. This is evidenced by the creation of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) to provide companies a framework to identify, assess, manage, and disclose nature-related issues.

Our Approach
We have investigated the potential impact of our operations on biodiversity using the newly developed WWF Biodiversity Risk Filter. The tool enables us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the potential risks our activities pose to ecosystems and wildlife. Using the results of this analysis, we aim to develop a management approach to limit our associated physical and reputational biodiversity risk.
Our Environmental Management Policy outlines our overall approach to managing the impact of our products and services on the environment, including nature and biodiversity impacts. As part of our approach, we have committed to:
- Minimize the environmental impact of our operations as well as the entire lifecycle of our products.
- Conserve natural resources, including water and the use of raw materials.
- Minimize the generation of waste.
- Minimize emissions, including greenhouse gas emissions.
- Promote environmental awareness amongst our partners, including assessing suppliers on their environmental management systems.

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
SDG 14: Life below Water
Managing our impact on biodiversity includes being committed to reducing marine litter through waste reduction initiatives and ensuring resin is handled correctly and does not end up in the marine environment.
SDG 15: Life on Land
By evaluating the environmental impact of our facilities and supply chain on biodiversity, we can manage our impact and help preserve land ecosystems and protect habitats.
