Unique bottle highlights Berry Agile Solutions’ Design Capabilities
Global sustainable packaging leader, Berry Global Group, Inc., partnered with Packamama to deliver a flat-pack shaped 100% recycled PET (rPET) plastic bottle that is being used by The Wine Society in a new market trial.
This first-of-its-kind, flat, plastic wine bottle delivers an eye-catching effect while reducing the bottle's weight to a mere 63 grams compared to the average 460-gram glass bottle. This reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to freight and is further supported by a life cycle assessment performed by The Wine Society, which found that 31% of their emissions came from making and disposing of glass bottles. In addition, Packamama wine bottles help contribute to a circular economy by being easily and widely recyclable through standard kerbside collection.
"Berry Global has been an instrumental partner in Packamama's journey from the very beginning. Their commitment to producing high-quality, 100% recycled PET bottles has been vital to our mission of revolutionizing packaging with our eco-flat bottles. Berry's excellent customer service, flexibility in production, and robust support in R&D have not only fuelled our early-stage growth but have also ensured our ability to scale effectively to meet the growing demand of Packamama, including from prestigious customers like The Wine Society," said Santiago Navarro, CEO & Founder of Packamama.
The Packamama wine bottle achieves the Wine Society’s high brand standards while supporting its goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2032. The new bottle is produced at Berry’s plant in Beccles, England, and supplied to The Wine Society by Packamama for use in a market trial for the company’s four top-selling wines, including their best seller White Burgundy.
“We are committed to delivering innovative packaging solutions that help our customers meet the growing sustainability demands of today and tomorrow.” said Joe Horton, Sales and Marketing Director for Berry Agile Solutions. “This partnership demonstrates the versatility of plastic and potential to help advance a circular, net-zero economy while meeting unique branding requirements.”
Dom de Ville, Director of Sustainability and Social Impact at The Wine Society, affirmed the choice, stating, "the recycled plastic bottle is a really good option. It has a lower-carbon footprint than glass and can be recycled at home."

About The Wine Society
- Since 1874 The Wine Society has been doing business differently, putting our members before profit to ensure fairer bottle prices for both the people that enjoy them, and the winemakers who craft them.
- They offer fair, transparent, competitive, and sustainable prices to all members and suppliers, adopting an any day low-price approach and ensuring year-round value.
- The Wine Society has pledged to support its members by absorbing the costs of inflation and duty and any additional cash generated will go straight back into holding and reducing prices.
- Their eight-strong team of buyers only select wines they genuinely believe in (not the ones that make the most profit) which means they are able to seek out the best wines, whether under-the-radar gems, trusty favourites, or fine wine treasures.
- Forging fruitful, long-lasting relationships with our valued growers, The Wine Society guarantees exceptional quality at every price.
- Their sustainability plan covers five key pillars: acting on climate change, protecting our environment, sourcing responsibly, caring for our people and inspiring action. We send zero waste to landfill and we aim to be carbon neutral across our direct operations by 2024, reduce our Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2028, and be net zero across Scope 1, 2 & 3 by 2040.
