Berry Global Announces First Full-Scale Solar Installation in Asia
February 10, 2022
EVANSVILLE, Ind., February 10, 2022 – In alignment with its operational Impact 2025 sustainability goals and China’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2060, Berry Global Group, Inc. (NYSE: BERY) announced today a long-term Solar Power Energy Management Contract with Asia Clean Capital, a wholly owned subsidiary of Electricite De France to provide the equivalent electricity requirements of the Company’s Suzhou, China site operations. The rooftop solar power system can generate about 2,000,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) clean energy in its first year, and over 25 years will produce about 48,139,801 kWh in green energy. In addition to power from the on-site solar panels, the Suzhou site will also purchase renewable energy from the state electrical grid.
“We are committed to our leadership role in advancing toward a net-zero future. Through strategic investments such as this, we are lowering our greenhouse gas emissions, and are inherently lowering the Scope 3 emissions for our customers,” said Curt Begle, President of Berry’s Health, Hygiene, and Specialities Division.
This agreement of the production of renewable energy is one of many steps Berry Global is taking to lower the carbon emissions of its operations. After 25 years, through the implementation of this renewable energy source, Berry’s Suzhou facility will realize savings of 40,485 CO2, equivalent to:
• Carbon sequestered by 674,760 tree seedlings grown for 10 years1
• 17,244,843 liters of gasoline burned1
• 767 apartments powered for 25 years2
1 The data calculation is based on “China Electric Power Industry Annual Development Report 2019” published by China Electricity Council
2 Calculation is based on “Basic Statistic Data of Chinese Power Industry in 2017” published by China Electricity Council, and assume 4 members in 1 family
“By adding solar panels to our Suzhou facility, the energy source composition will now include clean energy. This shift benefits us for preferential policies in energy usage and helps us to take an important step forward toward Green Factory Creation in 2022,” said Andy Wang, Project Leader in Suzhou Plant, Berry’s Health, Hygiene, and Specialties Division.
