We recently partnered with Mondelēz International and LyondellBasell to use 50% International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS-certified circular plastic via advanced recycling, based on a mass balance approach, into protective film liners for Triscuit Crackers packaging in the U.S. and Canada. This innovative packaging solution complements the current outer box made from 100% recycled paperboard and 35% post-consumer recycled content.

The new bag-in-box liners are expected to help Mondelēz divert more than one million pounds of plastic waste from landfills per year, advancing the company’s sustainable packaging goals and commitment to achieve 5% recycled plastic content by 2025 while continuing to deliver safe, fresh snacks to Triscuit fans.

“Partnering with Berry and embracing advanced recycling technology for our product represents exciting momentum towards our brand’s commitment to more sustainable packaging in the near term, while helping support the company’s longer-term circular economy vision,” said Caitlin Schell, Marketing Director for Triscuit, Mondelēz International. “Collaborative efforts like these are essential in keeping materials in use and out of the environment, continuing to deliver high-quality products at scale, and signaling the need—and opportunity—for greater industry-wide change.”

With many brand owners searching for pathways to achieve their sustainability goals, inclusive of renewable or recycled material use in their packaging, Berry’s ISCC PLUS-certified facilities can provide customers with assurance on the chain of custody of the circular content. These materials meet the ISCC’s standards for recycled, renewable, and recycled-renewable materials, providing traceability along the supply chain, verifying that certified companies meet high environmental and social standards.

This collaborative effort is aligned with our ongoing commitment to designing and developing innovative solutions that support our customers’ ambitious sustainability goals.

“We are committed to blending our unique expertise and world-class facilities to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that tackle our customers’ most common and pressing packaging hurdles,” said Wesley Porter, Business Development Director, Sustainability & Innovation, Berry Global. “Creating demand for advanced recycling and certified circular content drives more end markets for recycling polyethylene-based, flexible packaging.”
